The method of signaling a driver that you are hitchhiking may differs from one country to the next. In the U.S.A., one would point his thumb up, while in some places in South America one displays to an oncoming car the back of her hand with the index finger pointing up. In Poland, the hand is held flat, and waved. In India, the hand is waved with the palm facing downwards. Before hitchhiking in a country, find out the signal method. A hitchhiker may also hold a sign with the name of their destination.
